Why it is okay to be the grinch at Christmas

Many people find Christmas stressful and if already struggling financially, this time of year can be extra stressful.

So four ways to survive Christmas without a financial meltdown?

  • Ignore Christmas (so you don't have to buy presents)

  • If you can't, be honest and tell family and friends you love them and you are the gift this year - your presence is their presents

  • Think of home made gifts, recycled gifts, vouchers for time - be creative

  • If all else fails, remember it will soon be January

1. Ignore Christmas

You've been working hard to keep afloat this year, coping with price increases for food, power etc. Why spoil your hard work for just a few hours over-indulgence?

Who said you have to follow the crowd and keep Christmas? Who dictates that you have to buy everyone presents?

2. Honesty

People who care about you know how hard you are trying to get by, so just tell them you can't afford to spend money on non -necessities this year.

3. Get creative

If you are uncomfortable giving nothing tangible, think what you can make - a cake, a bunch of flowers from your garden, knit something, paint something - the options are endless.

Or you could give a voucher for your time or for tasks eg for Grandma, the voucher could say "Valid for 1 mowing of your lawn."

4. Look forward

This too will pass :)

In conclusion

Whatever happens, remember we are still here to help, whether that is helping you back on track after Christmas, or helping you use wisely the money you saved by ignoring Christmas.

Keep well. Keep safe.
